Video Poker (VP for short) is a card generating casino machine, in which a player builds the best poker hand (5 cards). The basic rules are very simple – you bet some points to get the first deal of 5 cards, choose which cards to keep and then get another deal to replace the cards you discarded - that’s your hand. All together it is called a betting round.

If the hand is high enough for the payout tables (usually a pair of Jacks or better), you get paid its worth. The hands hierarchy is derived from the Poker game. The higher the hand, the more you get paid for your bet.

If you win you get the chance to play "Double or nothing" on your earnings by drawing a higher card than the dealer. If you win, you get double your payout. If you lose, you lose everything.

There are four kinds of VP machines in Vegas Video Poker, each with its own unique payout table – that means that a payout for a full house in a Jacks or Better machine is different from a Double-Double Bonus machine.

  • Jacks or Better – This is the classic machine. Jacks or better means you have to get a pair of Jacks or a better hand than that to enter the payout table.
  • Deuces Wild – In this type of VP the cards with the value of 2 are considered "wild cards" – they can replace any card in the deck to complete a better hand.
  • Double Bonus – This is a variant of the Jacks or Better machine, with a payout table a bit more elaborate than that of Jacks or Better - in essence, the payout for the better hands is more rewarding than the lesser ones.
  • Double-Double Bonus – An even more elaborate variant of the Double Bonus machine.

Video Poker and slot machines have a common history. The first slot machines, developed by Sittman and Pitt in 1891 had 5 drums, each covered by 10 card symbols (for a total of 50 cards) and the payouts were drink or cigar coupons. The two missing cards were the Ten Hearts and Jack of Spades so to make it more difficult to complete winning hands including straights and four-of-a-kinds, effectively reducing the chances of the last and Royal Flushes by half (Either in Tens or better or Jacks or better, as the payout was not automatic but dependent on what establishment announced).

The famous Liberty bell slot machine was introduced by Charles Frey in 1899, with the traditional playing card symbols being replaced with hearts, spades, bells and horseshoes, rather than poker face cards.

Payouts were given when a set number of symbols appeared rather than winning poker combinations, and for so many years poker hands disappeared off the face of machines.

Video poker as we know it was born in 1970 by Dale Electronics. Poker-Matic video poker machines were placed in Las Vegas casinos. Neither Dale Electornics, nor Walt Farly's video slot (introduced in 1975) were too popular due to the fact that their state-of-the-art technology was not trusted by players due to the fact that the players couldn't see the reels spinning.

In 1979 SIRCOMA (now known as IGT) placed DRAW POKER in the Las Vegas casino and broke video poker's popularity glass ceiling, albeit it used the same technology as the earlier ones and not spinning reels. Still, it was a popular machine on its own right and encouraged the trust in its payouts.

The 1980's helped a lot with the popularity of both video poker and slots machines. The well known casino table games had lost the shier audience in favor of the slots and Video Poker machines.

Technological breakthroughs, including the internet, diversified Video Poker and Slots into numerous sub-titles varying in payout combinations, interface, game style and added features.

In 1994 the first online casino was born, developed by Microgaming, which was rapidly copied and overwhelmed by other software developers in all aspects, both as a play for pay platform and for casual gaming purposes.
